kawa3

Meaning and Context:

Kaava means the crow- the symbolic news bearer of folk love stories.

In older days, when traders undertook long sea voyages, they would take the help of crows to find the direction to the coast. They would release the crow and follow it to reach their destination. The arrival of a crow, therefore, meant arrival of a ship. The women would look out to see if it was their own husbands or lovers who had returned. And so, eventually the crow came to be seen as the news bearer of the lover’s return.

The song is for a wedding celebration, being sung by the families of the bride and groom, rejoicing the arrival of the glorious day. As the fathers, the brothers, the uncles begin to sing, they pray for bounty and prosperity in the couple’s life. Sung in Punjabi, it resound with the characteristic boldness and strength of Punjab, evoking images of acres upon acres of farmlands blooming with lush harvest.

As the womenfolk join in, they express joy over how beautiful the evening is, how the sound of shehnai melts in the air and how everyone is happily dancing away to its tune. They ask everyone to sing praises (toliyan) for the bride and the groom and shower their blessings upon them.

Line by line translation:

Today my heart is like….

God, oh God, make it rain
So our homes remain filled with grains

Crow, crow, crow…

Today my heart is like
The wind would lift me up
For my fate has
Covered me with cool shade
And my heart is like….

Crow, crow, crow…

Shehnais are playing in our house
Happiness has come laughing and dancing
Dark nights have passed away
Sing praises, sing praises,
Sing praises, it has all come true

Crow, crow, crow…

Today my heart is like
I want to go around sharing my happiness
For my fate has
Covered me with cool shade
And my heart is like….
