Meaning & Context

The diversity of Indian culture is quite well known. This diversity pervades all aspects of traditional festivities and occasions that are celebrated in all parts of the country. The occasion of marriage, for instance, is an example of this fact. The picture above shows a traditional Maharashtrian bride, her appearance would change, if only subtly, if she were from any other part of the country. The way the traditional attire is worn, the way the hair is made, the type of flowers used, the kind of jewellery worn- everything would differ from region to region, community to community.

However, the great thing about Indian weddings is that, notwithstanding such diversity, they are all bound together by the same thread of emotions. This song celebrates the nuptial of a Maharashtraian bride- the Navrai Majhi – but it’s sensitivity and emotions can be found present in a wedding anywhere in India. The family of the bride sings for her, praising her beauty, her shyness, her happiness as she walks towards her new life, a spontaneous, emotional gesture that is, in one way or another, part of weddings everywhere in India.

The opening lines are in Marathi, the language spoken in the state of Maharashtra. Besides the language, the words too are very characteristic of the Maharashtrian culture. Apsara jashi indraachi indrachi ga – the beauty of the bride is compared to the immaculate beauty of mythical nymphs from the court of Indra, the God of rains.

The song goes on to praise various aspects of her beauty and her equally beautiful attire and it dies so in a very playful yet heartfelt manner. The new bride is first and foremost a daughter, who was brought up with so much love and care. Even now she seems so young, so fragile. The family hopes that the groom would take good care of her and fulfil all her wishes, even if it requires him to get the moon!

Lyrics to the song:

Navrai majhi laadachi laadaachi ga
Avada hila chandraachi chandrachi ga
Navrai majhi navsaachi navasachi ga
Apsara jashi indraachi indrachi ga..

Baurai chali sharmaati ghabraati wo
Piya ke ghar ithlaati balkhaati wo
Surmai naina chhalkaati-chhalkati wo
Piya ke ghar bharmaati sakuchaati wo

Choonar mein iske sitaare
Saare chamkile chamkile chamkile
Kangan main iske bahaarein
Paajeb hariyale hariyale hariyale

Navrai majhi…

Suniyo ji isko, rakhiyo jatan se
ye badi naazuk hai, naazuk hai, nazuk
Kali yeh anmol, kali yeh anmol
Aao ji aao thumka lagao
Zara behko ji, behko ji, behko
Khushiyon ke baaje dhol..

Aankhon mein iske ishaare
Bade nakhrile nakhrile nakhrile
Sapnon ke laakhon nazaare
Saare rangeele rangeele rangeele

Navrai majhi…

Line by line translation:

The new bride was brought up with much love
She has grown a fondness for the moon
The new bride was born with God’s blessings
She is like a beautiful nymph of Indra

The new bride moves shyly, timidly
To her husband’s home, charmingly, elegantly
Her kohl laden eyes are spilling, are spilling
To her husband’s home, bashfully, tenderly

In her chunari are stars
All shimmering, shimmering, shimmering
In her bangles is the Spring
Her anklets like greenery, greenery, greenery

The new bride…

Listen, keep her with care
She is so delicate, delicate, delicate
A priceless flower bud, priceless flower bud
Come, oh come, and dance
Turn a little, a little, a little
The drums of happiness are beating

In her eyes are hints
Of her fancies, fancies, fancies
Of a thousand dream like visions
All colourful, colourful, colourful

The new bride…
