Chanda re

January 27, 2012

Meaning and Context:

Chanda re from Eklavya is an adorable little song and I really love it. Set in modern day Rajasthan, the story of Eklavya is told like a folk tale, with princes and camels and palaces and palace guards. This song, sung most beautifully by Hamsika Iyer, is like the heart of the film.

The meaning of the song is quite simple. The girl is admiring her lover’s beauty and calling him chanda (moon), and asking him to give up his pride and smile- smile so she knows he feels the same way about her.

The Song:

Chanda re, chanda re
Dheere se muska
Howle se, howle se
Palko me chup ja

Howle se, howle se,
Badal ke jhule pe
Muska…

Arey luka chupi khele
Chanda taron ke sang
Kaun thame dori,
Tu hai kiski patang?

Chanda, o re chanda
Tera kaisa guroor?
Has de zara sa
Barsa de tu noor

Line by line translation:

Dear moon, dear moon
Smile a little
Softly, softly
Hide in my eyes

Softly, softly
On the swing of clouds
Smile…

Plays hide and seek
Moon with the stars
Who is holding your string?
Whose kite are you?

Oh Moon, dearest moon
Why such pride?
Smile a little
Shower us with diamonds
