Kariye na koi vada kisi se

January 22, 2012

Meaning and Context:

Pure, simple, and emotional – that’s how people from the mountains are. They are often heard singing of unrequited love and unkept promises. They often sing of a traveller (pardesi) who left a village girl heartbroken. So, now, they are singing… kariya na koi vaada kisi se kariya na… kariye to vaada phir todiye na – Don’t make promises to anyone and if you make a promise then don’t break it.

But young blood seldom cares for white-haired wisdom. Their hearts are full of desires. They wish to fly away, on their whim and fancy, like a wayward kite. So, the father cautions the young daughter to not run after dreams and forget the ones who really care for her. Then, the father humours her and tells her that someday someone will come and take her away. And now, the daughter, too, is emotional and says she’ll never leave her father, no matter what the customs of society are.

The song is composed by A R Rahman in the distinctive pahadi style. The music is minimalist with the sound of mataki (earthen pot) being predominant. But it is really Sukhwinder Singh’s nuanced singing that makes the song memorable. It is only he whose voice has the right texture to suit such a delicate song. On the whole, the song resonates with the simplicity and sensitivity which is characteristic of, both, the people and the music of the hills.

Lyrics to the song:

Sa Sa Re Sa Sa…
Ga Ma Ga Re Re Sa Re Sa Sa….

Kariye na, kariya na koi vaada kisi se kariya na
Kariye kariye to vaada phir todiye na

Haath kisika pakadiye na
Pakadiye to phir chhodiye na

Mainu khich paindiye seene vich paindiye
O mainu kuchh ho gaya duniya kehnidye

O is kuchh ka naam jawaani hai
Ye umr badi deewani hai

Sache sab sapne lagte hain
Begaane apne lagte hain

Apno se munh modiye na
Sapnon ke peechhe daudiye na

Kariye na kariya na koi vaada kisise kariya na

Aina badla vi nal main jud jaavaan
Ban java patang main ud jaavaan

Koi pardesi aavega
Teri doli le jaavega

Main saari rasmein todoongi
Baabul ka ghar nahin chhodoongi

Takdeeron ka munh kholiye na
Chup rahiye kuchh boliye na

Kariye na kariya na koi vaada kisise kariya na
Kariye na kariya na koi vaada kisise kariya na

Line by line translation:

Musical notes sung

Father:
Don’t make promises to anyone
If you make the promise then don’t break it

Don’t hold anyone’s hand
If you do hold, then don’t leave it

Daugthter:
I am feeling a strain in my chest
Something has happened to me, or so the world is saying

Father:
The name of this “something” is youth
This age full of passion

All the dreams seem true
Strangers seem dear

Don’t turn away from your dear ones
Don’t run after your dreams

Don’t make promises to anyone…

Daughter:
Attaching myself to the string of these clouds
I want to fly away like a kite

Father:
Some stranger from a strange land will come
And will take away your doli (wedding palanquin)

Daughter:
I will break all traditions
And not leave my father’s home

Father:
Don’t dare your fate
Stay mum, don’t say a word

Don’t make promises to anyone…
