Chappa chappa charkha chale

January 22, 2012

Meaning and Context:

Chappa chappa charkha chale… a song about friendship, brotherhood and camaraderie.

The song is from the movie Maachis, which is about youth insurgence in Kashmir and Punjab. Charkha or the spinning wheel is a recurring symbol of self-reliance in the poetry of the region. As the charkha turns, hundreds and thousands of youth wake up and come together to fight for their rights. But when friends gather they reminisce the beauty, the teasing and playing of their lovers. How she dressed up, how she cared, how she teased- they take these sweet memories with them as they go to meet their fate.

The lyrics have a heavy Urdu touch, the language being prominent in that region. The song, even with its serious backdrop, is quite light-hearted. As the music is fairly upbeat, using both Kashmiri and Punjabi instruments, the song is popular at punjabi weddings even today.

Lyrics to the song:

Chappa chappa charkha chale
Chappa chappa charkha chale

Auni bauni yariyaan teri
Bauni bauni beriyon tale

Yaara be yaara be yaara be
Aa ni aa… pardesiya…

Hey Gori chatkori jo katori se khilaati thi
Jumme ke jumme jo surme lagaati thi
Kachchi munder ke tale

Arre jhoothi moothi mui ne rasoi mein pukaara tha
Lohe ke chimte se lipte ko maara tha
Oye beeba tera chulha jale

Chunni leke soti thi kamaal lagti thi
Pani mein jalta charaag lagti thi
Beeba teri yaad na tale

Chappa chappa charkha chale

Goriyon ke peiron tale
Peeli peeli mehndi jale

Line by line translation:

Spinning wheels are turning
Spinning wheels are turning

Friends are coming together
Under the puny berry trees

Friend, oh friend
Come, come dear friend

Remember the girl who fed us from the bowl
Who wore kohl every Friday
Under the weak archway

For a false excuse she called me into the kitchen
And hit me with the iron clamp
While her stove kept burning

Sleeping in her wrap she looked so beautiful
Like a lamp lit over water
Oh girl, your thoughts never leave me

Spinning wheels are turning

Under the feet of pretty girls
Yellow heena now burns
