Laga re jal laga

January 15, 2012

Meaning and Context:

Water is wealth for the people of Rajasthan. Striking water is like striking gold for them. Laaga re jal laaga… expresses the joy that people feel when water is found after a long dry spell. How rivers and ponds and the many stepped wells (called bawdi) are gushing with water now. It marks the beginning of better times, of a new era.

The birth of water is then related to the birth of a child. This is shown in the song with the traditional ceremony of god-bharai (filling of lap), which is the Indian version of a baby shower. The mother-in-law of the girl fills her lap with grains, fruits, sweets and gifts and prays for her home to always stay overflowing with such bounty.

The song is very beautifully filmed, first in a bawdi, then near a pond and finally at the god bharai ceremony. The colours, the music…they come together so well. A truly incredible song!

Lyrics to the song:

Laaga Re Jal Laaga
Barsa Re Jal Barsa

Paat Paat Ki Baat Baat Par
Jhool Jhoolkar Phool Bajave Taaliyan
Ber Ber Maati Ka Dher Bole Sabur
Khole Saver Ki Laliyan
Dhan Hai Dhan Hai Jal Janma Hai
Mati ke badan se ek aur pal janma hai
Samay Ki Ghurni Se Naya Kal Janma Hai
Pal Janma, Re Jal Janma
Dekh Bhaalkar Aaj Kaal Par Laga Re Laga

Palkon Me Soya Huva Os Ka Dana Tha Piya
Vo Tera Nahin Mera Sapna Tha Anjana sa Piya
Jago Piya Sapna Jagaa
Tere Nayano Me Soya Tha Sapna Jaga
Tere Nayano Me Soya Samay Jaga Hai
Pal Jaga, Re Kal Jaga
Dekh Bhaalkar Aaj Kaal Par Laga Re Laga

Godi Me Dharti Ho Aakash Sar Par Bhara Bhara
Aangan Me Bajati Rahe Jhunjhuno Ki Sada Sada
Godi Teri Bhari Rahe, Teri Maang Me Sitare Bhare Rahe
Suhagan Lagan Surya Laaga Rahe
Jal Laaga, Re Phal Laaga
Ek Baar To, Pure Chand Ko Laaga Re Laaga

Laaga Re Jal Laaga
Barsa Re Jal Barsa

Line by line translation:

Water is found
Water is all around

The lap of Chavi is full and green
Full are pots and ponds
And the eyes of my maid

Water is found
Water is all around

On every whisper of each leaf
The flowers sway and clap
Berries mount up on trees
Filling the morning with crimson hues
Its wealth, its wealth, the birth of water
A new moment is born from the body of this land
A new tomorrow is born from the wheel of time
Time is born, water is born
It has struck today after a long wait

It lay asleep in my eyes like a dew drop, my love
A strange dream of mine it was, not yours my love
Wake now my love, the dream has awoken
The dream in your eyes has awoken
The time in your eyes has awoken
Time is born, tomorrow is born
It has struck today after a long wait

May this land in your lap and the sky over always be abundant
May there always chime trinkets in the courtyard

May you lap be always full, may stars always crown you
May Sun’s constellation of marriage always shine
Water is found, fruit is found
For once it has struck for the full moon

Water is found
Water is all around
