Shyam rang bhar do

December 11, 2011

Meaning and Context:

Shyam, as mentioned in another post, is not only a smoky grey-blue colour but also connotes the colour of Krishna and Krishna himself.

The song, a beautiful duet from Water, is a song of holi where Radha is asking her beloved Krishna to cover her with the colour of love. Holi has always been associated with Krishna, as he started this festival of colour. The holi of brij, the homestead of Krishna, the region of Gokul-Mathura-Vrindavan, is popular even today. The festival is still celebrated by the people of brij for a whole week with extraordinary vibrancy.

Even though the song is an original composition for the movie, it carries a very strong element of folk within. “Aa shyam rang me rang du” is a line very often used in folk songs of the region. Many of the other lyrics of the song like “rang-bhang ka hai mausam” and “utare kabhi na gori rang aisa tan pe mal du” are also very commonly used traditional lyrics. The song leaves us with vivid images of brij holi- dhol (a two sided wooden drum), gulaal (dry colour), bhang (home made intoxication) and, of course, shyam rang.

Lyrics to the song:

Aa shyam rang me rang du…
Mohey shyam rang rang de…

Utare kabhi na gori
Rang aisa tan pe mal du
Aaja…

Aaja re mayuri cham cham
Rang bhang ka hai mausam
Aaj nashe me chur door har gam
Mast hoke masti me jhume hum

Baja re zara dhol zor se
Kya bole zara bol zor se

Chaayi gulalo ki ghataye
Goonje deewano ki sadaye
Dil jhoom jhoom gaye

Umange bhari kaliyo se
Jeevan apna mehkaye
Aaja…

Man har rang ghulne de
Ang ang ye khilne de
Dil dil se milne de gori

Dil ki ye doori kyu?
Kar le has puri yu
Rang ke gulal se choli

Chali sanan sanan, chali sanan sanan
Chali chali re pawan chanan chan

Baja re zara dhol zor se
Kya bole zara bol zor se

Aa shyam rang me rang du…
Mohey shyam rang rang de…

Line by line translation:

Come let me colour you shyam
Colour me with shyam….

That never comes off
Let me rub such colour on you
Come…

Come dear peahen dancing
It’s the season for colour and wine
Lets drain our sorrows with wine
Lets free ourselves and dance

Play the drums a little louder
Whatever you said say a little louder

Coloured clouds are over us
Songs of lovers resound around us
The heart is swaying and singing

Flower buds full of joy
Will scent our lives
Come…

Let the colours fuse in your heart
Let your body bloom
Let the two hearts meet

Why such distance between hearts?
Fulfill your temptations
By colouring your covers so

Blowing with such speed
The wind is chiming

Play the drums a little louder
Whatever you said say a little louder

Come let me colour you shyam
Colour me with shyam….
